MUDGEE REGION
WINE & WINERIES
De Beaurepaire Wines - possibly our favourite stop when visiting the region (technically not in Mudgee but in Rylstone) showcasing delicious wines in the French style. We had a one on one tasting with Richard the owner in the old stone horse stable and it was a real treat, we all came away with various bottles and some new knowledge of Australian wines and in particular the impact the limestone has on the De Beaurepaire wines.
First Ridge - Italian varieties a plenty! If you like the Italian styles then this stop is for you. The cellar door has unreal views looking over the region and is made up of shipping containers, a really cool set up (plus the fire was roaring so it was nice and cosy on a cold day).
Heslop Wines - we had a great al fresco wine tasting at Heslop. Their quaint cottage cellar door is a perfect stop when the sun is shining, sitting in the garden tasting their wines was a real treat. I think we all grabbed a couple of bottles from here and one of the highlights was their “Bush Botanicals” which was an Aussie inspired vermouth.
Gilbert Family Wines - we went for their more premium tasting at this spot (I think it was like $20 for some delicious wines), we all loved their rieslings they had on offer plus a couple of their Shiraz. The cellar door was in a beautiful stone building that had a massive open fireplace and looked like it did a great lunch also.
Lowe Wines - lots of outdoor space and seating, plus heaps of room inside the winery/cellar door. I had been previously and again enjoyed our stop. I think the boys grabbed a few bottles but I didnt get anything here.
Petersons Wine - these guys have a few locations within different wine regions of NSW (like the Hunter Valley) and South Australia, and this isnt to say they are a big or commercial set up, they are producing some seriously delicious wines from around NSW with some great fruit coming from Mudgee! Worth a stop, we were very well looked after as one of the boys father-in-law was in the wine club.
Logan - a must visit for a lot of people. We didnt hit it on this most recent trip as everyone had already been previously and wanted to fit more options in, but a definite spot to stop to taste some delicious Mudgee wines and also wines from Orange. Epic big deck, looking back onto the range, perfect on a nice afternoon!
Short Sheep - Jax and I stopped here on our first trip to Mudgee and loved it, a really cool set up in what they call a “micro-winery”. Small batch, low intervention wines, only available at the cellar door. Stop in for a very cool experience.
FOOD
Most visits I have done to Mudgee we have brought our own food with us and cooked at our accomodations, for me it is just a better way to do it, especially if you are staying a little outside of town. Below are a couple of spots where we have had breakfast / lunch.
Mudgee Corner Store - stopped in here most mornings for coffee (and the delicious rocky road!). More than just a cafe, a great spot to pick up some local supplies for your trip.
Pipeclay Pumphouse - a great lunch spot serving middle eastern / Mediterranean food. We went with the set menu option and it was a great choice, lots of food to share with all. There was also the option for matching wines but we just selected bottles we wanted to drink from the list.
PUBS & BARS
The Mudgee Wine Shop - great spot to see all the local beers, wines, spirits in one place.
STAY
River Ranch Mudgee - we stayed at River Ranch on our most recent trip to Mudgee, I think it was all booked through AirBnB (one of the other boys sorted that so not 100% sure). It was a great spot to base ourselves, set away from town on a beautiful property surrounded by hills and situated right next to a gently bubbling river. We had the four of us stay but could easily accomodate 4 couples (one couple would be in two single beds). Great kitchen set up, heaps of space, and lots of amazing outside entertaining areas. Plus there are animals on the property like alpacas and horses and lots and lots of kanagaroos which is fun for the little (and big) kids.
