BAROSSA VALLEY

WINE & WINERIES

Rieslingfreak - I was very proud to walk into the new cellar door at Rieslingfreak, you see, way back in 2011 I was on MasterChef with John “The Freak” Hugh’s and back then John’s passion for the riesling variety was strong, today it shines through in an amazing light and bright cellar door showcasing some of the best of what the Barossa and Clare Valley have to offer when it comes to the variety.

Tscharke - Wow, this was a very cool experience. We opted for the Underground Cellar experience and it did not disappoint, it was like stepping into a James Bond villans lair but instead being filled with crazy cars and weapons this underground cave is a wine lovers dream! Tscharke is not to be missed when in the area.

The Cutting - when I first told Jax we were going to be doing a wine blending experience, she wasn’t too sure, but she came away from our afternoon with Belinda at The Cutting telling me that this was her favourite moment of the trip. So much fun to be able to not only taste amazing wine but learn about the passion, the family history and the love that Belinda & Daniel have for their product and their land.

Torbreck - now I love a Torbreck wine don’t get me wrong, but the cellar experience wasn’t like some of the other moments we had in the Barossa. It was great to hear the story and taste some of the wines (I did pick something up there that you can’t get at a bottle shop) but it just wasn’t as captivating as some of our other tastings.

Gomersal Wines - to visit on our next trip

Smallfry Wines - to visit on our next trip

Wonderground & Mirus Vinyards - to visit on our next trip

FOOD

Harvest Kitchen - we stopped in here on the first day, it was the perfect start to our weekend. The great thing about the Barossa Valley is its proximity to Adelaide and the fact you can fly in, jump in the car and be in the region within an hour is pretty cool, straight into a nice late lunch and Harvest Kitchen was a perfect pick, the food was fresh, packed with Mediterranean and middle eastern flavours and had a real farm to table feel. The restaurant is located in with the Jacobs Creek Visitor Center so there is a chance to do a tasting of Jacobs Creek wines while you are there also (it should be noted that the restaurant serves many wines from the region and not just Jacobs Creek)

Vintners Bar & Grill - this lunch was exactly the vibe your want on a cooler winters day in the Barossa Valley. The gigantic fireplace was roaring, the service was attentive, local and super knowledgable, and the food was spot on. This is the sort of place where you could quite easily lock in for a long lunch, sit down at 12 and not move for a few hours! I love the way they have their menu set up, with options and set prices for 2, 3 or 4 courses. Makes the decision making easy and allows you to enjoy your time there. Vintners is definitely on the list again for our next visit.

Maggie Beer Farmshop - I was reliving my childhood food tv obsession walking into Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, not only do they have all the Maggie produce we love but they also have the “The Cook & The Chef” TV set in place where they film the classic TV series. Very very cool. Now, as the name suggests the farm shop is exactly that, a shop, there is food there but mainly cakes and pastries. If you want a meal then you need to visit (at the same location) The Eatery.

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company - we saw the sign for the chocolate company as we were driving down the road and had to stop, and I am glad we did, chocolate heaven! And something for everyone! Plus you get a full frontal view of the chocolate factory and the chocolate making process. Lots for the whole family and a great outdoor area too.

Tanunda Hotel - they say it takes a lot of beer to make good wine, so we thought we would enjoy a pint or two at the local watering hole! We had a deliciously simple pub feed, steak, schnitties and a round of pool (which I lost to Jax and cost me a $800 pair of sunnies - you can watch that here…..not happy!)

Mikes Burgers - juicy beers, juicy burgers = perfect

Tanunda Bakery & Cafe - all your classics and sometimes all you need!

Hentley Farm - to visit on our next trip

Staguni - to visit on our next trip

Appellation - to visit on our next trip

BARS

Bar:Musque - gin lovers will love this spot.
